my idea for this project is to create a public setting for individuals to come together and improve with music. This piece would have installed percussion instruments that are weatherproof in an out door public area. El Sistema is a global movement for music in which became famous in a poor Venezuelan society developed a music program in which every child participated in.
World famous conductor Gustavo Dudamel grew up in this music enriched neighborhood as well as many more musicians.
I know this is not the visual arts but this program has taken on a new meaning social sculpture and thus changed the education, expression, music appreciation, as well as work ethic.Similar programs have been popping up all over the world.

One Million Bones

"One Million Bones is a large-scale social arts practice, which means we combine education, hands-on art making, and public installations to raise awareness of ongoing genocides and mass atrocities in places like Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia and Burma.
We are collecting 1,000,000 handcrafted bones for a three-day installation event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., June 8-10, 2013. The installation will exist as a collaborative site of conscience to honor victims and survivors, and will also serve as a visual petition against ongoing conflicts and a resounding call for much need and long overdue action."

EXAMPLES OF THIS KIND OF WORK #3

And what about this work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres?

It uses going to a museum, and what you see there, and what you do there -- in a unique way.

EXAMPLES OF THIS KIND OF WORK #2

For an article about another artist, mentioned in the book, Rirkrit Tiravanija.  Click here.

EXAMPLES OF THIS KIND OF WORK #1

An artist I've mentioned in class, Ben Kinmont, has done a lot of this kind of work.  Follow this link to his website, to the Projects page.  Click on and read about different projects he's done.  This will be helpful in understanding the ideas we're discussing, and possibly inspiring ideas for your own work -- in or out of this class.

(here's one)
title:  WAFFLES FOR AN OPENING

"Many years later, I read that Robert Filliou had thought that art about life was not so important for what it did for art, but for what it did for life.

For a two-month period people came to our house for waffle breakfasts. I was thinking about if it was safe for my family, how many would come, and who was trusting most. My biggest surprise was how my friends didn't come, but strangers did. We signed the paper plates as a thanks for coming and I started to see it as the gift sculpture object."
